What is compounding?

Pharmacy compounding is the art and science of preparing individualized or customized medication for patients. Compounding is not new to pharmacy. tcprx005It was around when the profession started many years ago. Around 1930’s the pharmacists compounded many preparations every day. The drug manufacturing industry developed in later years. As years past, compounded or tailor made medications slowly declined. The pharmacist became dispenser of manufactured dosage forms. Over the last 20 years, technology, innovative techniques and research have allowed more pharmacists to meet specific patient needs that are not catered for by mass production prepared products. Most compounding pharmacists have chosen to specialize in a particular area of compounding such as pain management, dermatology, and hormone replacement, dental or even veterinary products.

Pain Management

Chronically ill patients who are in constant pain are generally prescribed multiple medications often without good outcomes. Many of these patients in most cases stop taking medications because of serious side effects.

We can prepare an appropriate medication working closely with the prescriber.
The delivery system and concentration of the compounded medication can result in optimum pain relief for the patient.

Here, we are also thinking about good compliance or alternate dosage forms, suppositories and transdermal gels have been utilized to deliver medications to patients with swallowing difficulties.

Dental Compounding

Dentists work in unique environment of the mouth which can pose some therapeutic challenges. Specialized dosage forms prepared by us can lead to positive therapeutic outcomes. This may involve the preparation of medication in a more adherent dosage form for aphthous ulcers, sugar free and alcohol free mouth rinses, dry socket pastes with multiple active ingredients, anaesthetic gels, saliva stimulant troches or rinses, lip balm for cold sores, topical ointments or creams for angular cheilosis of adherent antifungal powders for denture stomatitis. The most challenging part of dental compounding is to prepare palatable products without affecting efficacy of medication.
